PHL Enforcement Officer speaks out

Kimmo Timmonen's Flying Knee: Seals GM wanting harsher penalties/suspensions by PHL disciplinary officials.

Okay, in the heat of battle, tempers do flare. I get that and can relate, being an intense competitor myself.

However, when a guy has to defend or stand up for himself immediately after landing a perfectly clean, crushing hit, this is getting annoying and could lead to another potential dangerous situation. Often after a player delivers such a blow, he is momentarily defenceless and that is comparable to being hit from behind, when the teammate of the victim immediately starts his attack.

Of course, there are times when it is borderline whether or not bone-jarring hockey hits are clean or dirty. Nonetheless, it should be left up to the officials or even the PHL higher brass (ME) to make that call. Of course, easier said than done.

After taking time to view every angle of Timmonen's hit, I saw no phantom "flying knee" and there will be no further discussion about a suspension on the clean hit to Patrick O'Sullivan.

Whatever happened to taking a player’s number and getting payback later in the game or even in the season, but all within the framework of the rules? Hitting is obviously a major part of sports like football and rugby. How do players respond in those respective sports when a tremendous hit is laid? Teammates take numbers and revenge can indeed be sweet, but in most circumstances, within the confines of the rules.

Again, sticking up for teammates – good.

But…a player getting punished for performing one of the most exciting plays in hockey – NOT acceptable

Patrick O'Sullivan started the season with a lot to prove. A terrible last season, stripped of his team captaincy, and questions about his worth to the Seals. For half the season opener against the Bruins he looked like the second coming of Wayne Gretzky. "Patty was everywhere......6 shots on goal, game winning goal.....outstanding" said new captain Evgeny Grachev.

Then came Kimmo Timmonen's flying knee. With O'Sullivan working the boards, Timmonen came in like a wrestler in WWE and smashed O'Sullivan into next week.

O'Sullivan will miss 8 games with a severely bruised sternum. League disciplinarian Warren Colston determined that flying knees are "a hockey play" and something that the PHL doesn't want taken out of the game. Timmonen will not be suspended.

ST.LOUIS - Now that the preseason has wrapped up the title defense for the Blues begins and it will not be an easy task at all. At least half of the starting roster has changed due to retirement, trades or signed elsewhere (waivers):

The Blues may not be as strong defensively as last year but should still field a strong enough roster to compete. They will need it especially when you take a quick look around the league as a few teams have gone out hard in trying to bolster their rosters. The Maple Leafs, who will always be contenders fielding one of the top teams, and Red Wings have improved their teams. The Americans who drafted 2 twin towers on defense should be better. The Whalers and Bruins are 2 other teams to should be near the top. But as we know anything can happen during the regular season. In any case, let's get this show on the road and drop the puck.

Rangers Predictions for the Divisions

Based on my rankings of the Centers, LWers, RWers, Defense-men and Starting Goalies Here are my selections for order of divisions:

ADAMS Division

BRUINS (C - 1, LW - 2, RW - 2, D - 1, G - 4)
WHALERS (C - 3, LW - 1, RW - 4, D - 2, G - 5)
CANADIENS (C - 2, LW - 5, RW - 5, D - 3, G - 2)
SABRES (C - 4, LW - 4, RW - 1, D - 4, G - 1)
SENATORS (C - 5, LW - 3, RW - 3, D - 5, G - 3)

Bruins win this division hands down even though in my opinion... they have the 4th strongest starting goalie in the division. Who needs a goalie when you rank highly in the other cats.


PATRICK Division

AMERICANS (C - 1, LW - 5, RW - 4, D - 1, G - 2)
ISLANDERS (C - 2, LW -1 , RW - 3, D - 4, G - 5)
RANGERS (C - 3, LW - 4, RW - 2, D - 2, G - 1)
FLYERS (C - 4, LW - 2, RW - 5, D - 3, G - 4)
NORTHSTARS (C - 5, LW - 3, RW - 1, D - 5, G - 3)

Americans will win this division, even with the low rankings in RW and LW. In my opinion it is a toss up for 2nd between my Rangers and the Islanders (I give the nod to the Islanders). The Flyers are slipping in the Division where they were so strong in a couple seasons ago and the Northstars are
just to weak to compete.


NORRIS Division

It is really a toss up between Chicago and Toronto as to who wins the division. I am going to pick Toronto. I guess youc an say that 3 teams will be bidding for first place in Toronto, Chicago and Detroit. This is my order though.

I am going out on a limb as this is the hardest division to predict. Seals will take this division by the rankings I give the different areas. Oilers are definitely an improved team from years past. They will give the Seals a run for div title.

Hi guys,

I have updated the trades, TCs and Draft Picks since June 28. Please, please take a look to make sure everything looks right, especially the number of TCs you think you should have. It's always during the offseason when TCs fly around that I may have missed one or two. I have gone back through the current season's trades and last years (check in archives for Trades 11) and re-counted all the TCs for PHL 12. Everyone started with 5 for each season with some teams having been penalized and losing 2 for goalie violations last season. You may have to talk to Steve on those ones. Otherwise please verify, else if I hear nothing I assume all is correct.
